Sports and political debate are crucial to the survival of our democracy. Sports are expressions of solidarity with athletes we look up to as role models. Sports are vehicles of social change and can unite as Americans. Political debate is the life blood of our democratic society. It is a universal value to engage in meaningful debate to discuss our hopes and fears for our society, to highlight what separates us, so we can learn to ease our way past them. I created Sportocracy to illuminate those things that revive our American spirit of competition and debate. At a time when debate is needed to change the status quo in America and sports are needed to unite us, I chose to write this blog. My name is Daniel Escalona, and as young, college-aged journalist, sports and politics are needed to change our democracy for the better.
